CCR QUESTION 1 RESEARCH

CCR Question One Research

Hi! This week our teacher went over all of the CCR questions and I started to think of all of the different ideas and things I can do for it. Today I am going to be discussing the research that I did for question one of the CCR portion of my portfolio project. ""How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?" While answering this question I need to consider many things. First what are some genre conventions for the horror genre? Some typical settings for horror genre is long roads, the woods, or isolated locations. Usually the main characters are people that are vulnerable, young, attacker, or the victim. Often the colors in the horror genre are very dark and red is typically used to signify danger and blood. In most horror films death is involved. Revenge is a very common theme among this genre. Within this genre the audiences minds are to be played with and they are supposed to feel very connected within the film so their emotions of the film are real.

Next, let's think about some of these genre conventions that my opening uses. Well, the plot of my opening is about revenge which connects to the genre of horror. My opening also gets very dark by the use of coloring, costuming, and setting which is very common in the genre of horror. A car crash also fits within the horror genre as well does the death of Sarah. Something else that matches with the conventions of horror is all of the bruises and the very gory sight of Sarah with all of her injuries.

Why my group decided not to challenge genre conventions in our opening is because we really wanted it to fit the horror genre. Since our opening can only be a few minutes long we have to make sure to get across what we want to to the audience in a very short period of time. We felt that if we stay within these genre conventions that it will be easy to understand that the we want our opening to be very scary, suspenseful and play with our audiences minds. The concept of our audience being confused at what is going on in certain times in the opening fits even more specifically of the sub genre of psychological horror.

For the part about the representation theory I am not sure which one I believe me and my group have used. I have done a lot of research and I think that what we used was Stuart Halls Encoding and Decoding Theory. This theory is how audiences interpret things differently based on the things that they have experience in their life and how they see things. Our opening may be seen very differently by different groups of people.

This is a picture of the setting of the car crash which fits horror conventions since it is dark and the road is pretty empty.
